KOSCHECK SEES WEIGHTY ISSUES WITH JOHNSON

As a collegiate wrestler, Josh Koscheck was well acquainted with the joys of weight cutting.

Koscheck, a former NCAA Division I champion at 174-pounds for Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, says he used to walk around heavy and cut to 163 pounds for several meets.

So the 31-year-old welterweight relates to Anthony Johnson, his opponent at UFC 106 on Saturday.

Johnson, 25, made headlines for missing a Knockout of the Night bonus at UFC 104 for missing weight by five pounds. He was so dehydrated he had to be carried to the scale.

In a pre-fight interview for the October fight, Johnson said he was cutting 50 pounds to make the 170-pound class.

“I’ve been in that situation before where I’ve had to cut a lot of weight,” said Koscheck.  “In your training camp you focus more on the weight cut. More on the ‘oh, I’ve gotta make weight,’ than actual training and focusing on the important things: your cardio and your sparring.”

As such, Koscheck believes Johnson’s size will work against him when they meet Saturday.

“He’s focused on other things,” he said. “I think that’s going to play a big factor in this game.”
